The White House has introduced a new cybersecurity safety label program for internet-connected consumer devices. The U.S. Cyber Trust Mark, launching in 2025, will help consumers identify smart devices that meet NIST’s security standards.
Products earning the label must include essential security features such as strong default passwords, software updates, data protection, and incident detection capabilities. Each label will include a QR code providing detailed security information, including update policies and configuration instructions.
The program targets a wide range of smart devices including:
- Home security cameras
- Smart TVs
- Internet-connected appliances
- Fitness trackers
- Climate control systems
- Baby monitors
Major tech companies including Amazon, Google, Best Buy, LG Electronics, Logitech, and Samsung have already committed to participating. The FCC has approved 11 companies as Cybersecurity Label Administrators to manage the program and certify products.
While participation is voluntary, the initiative aims to encourage manufacturers to prioritize cybersecurity features, similar to how EnergyStar labels promoted energy efficiency. Retailers like Amazon and Best Buy plan to highlight certified products once the program launches.
